5 out of 5 stars Great first scooter   December 29, 2008

We live in a mild area, so my daughter was able to take her scooter out and use it even though it was a holiday gift. She really enjoys it, although she doesn't have it down perfectly yet. She's five.

The scooter is very well made, even though it's plastic. The base is very sturdy and larger than other scooters and the wheels move smoothly. The handle really moves the front wheels as it should. Some of the other beginner scooters don't have this option and actually don't have moving front wheels.

The moving axle/front wheels and non-hollow wheels were the main selling point for me.

I think this scooter CAN go fast, too, once they are ready to move a bit faster. I tried it out, as well, and it seemed to really start moving. However, she's pushing it a bit more slowly, and is more tentative with it. We've only been out with it twice so far, but I do think it's a worthwhile purchase and an excellent first scooter-- especially in comparison with the others out there.

One more thing: we did, at one time, have a Kettler Scooter Fox TR Height-Adjustable Scooter that I purchased for my 12 year old son when he was five or so. It had a rear brake (the radio flyer does NOT have a brake) and he didn't use it too often (went right for the faster razor scooter). I had saved this but I think it was stolen, because when I went to find it for my daughter, it was nowhere to be found and I had recalled taking it out over the summer. Anyways, I do think this scooter is a better option. This one has three wheels and a larger base. It's also less than half the cost. Kettler does make some three-wheeled scooters, too, but I haven't used those. We never found the rear brake too easy to use, I remember, because it's easy to press down too fast. And, really, the brake isn't necessary. Kettler's did have rubber-coated wheels, though (more like tires without need to inflate), so the wheels were definitely better, But, these wheels are perfectly fine. If my daughter really starts using her scooter a lot, I can see replacing this within a couple of years with a regular scooter. Therefore, the cost differential is significant and I wouldn't want to spend more for the Kettler scooter again. At the time I bought that, I don't think Radio Flyer made a first scooter. If you have a child or two that would also use the scooter when the first outgrows it, I would consider the three-wheeled Kettlers with the rubber wheels, since those wheels would definitely last longer than these and the added use would justify the added expense.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Preschooler!   December 16, 2008

Super sturdy and cute scooter that is a perfect size for my 4 year old boy. Does not tip over, and has a wide place for him to stand. He loves zooming around on it.

2 out of 5 stars Breaks easily!   December 14, 2008

Radio Flyer My First Scooter
We had this for about a month and had a hard time at first figuring out how to fold the scooter. After several efforts, the bar with handles started to loosen and would bend forward slightly when our 2 yr. old tried to push himself on it, making it pretty unstable.
Next he overturned it, stood on the bar and managed to break off one plastic handle bar completely! This product is cheap plastic and I wish we had bought him one that actually used metal. We ended up tossing the whole thing because we could never glue the handle on right again, and with the bar not secure to the board, it made it a hazardous trap. Stick with metal scooters, especially for first time users!

4 out of 5 stars Best Beginner Scooter!   December 10, 2008

This has to be the best Beginner Scooter out there! My son got this last year for Christmas (when he was 2) and it was so easy for him to get on it and learn even in our apt. that he was a pro by the end of the summer ( we live in NYC so dont get much scooter time in winter) all in all this is a great sturdy durable timeless toy that can be passed on for many years.

2 out of 5 stars Handle bar is stiff   December 6, 2008

Honestly, my boys will ride it for a block (they are now 4), and then will be done with it. It's just too stiff. They try to turn the handles and the wheels won't turn more than an inch left or right. I think the reason is that the part are all plastic. I like that they fold up, but that's about it. I wish I would have bought one with two wheels and one in the front! I have seen that style made without all plastic and I think it would ride better. They are pretty slow. With that being said, my 2 year old can ride it by himself and likes it for a minute or two. But a boy that wants a real ride, I would look for something else.
