 Probably Not The Best Purchase Due To Its Flaws... May 16, 2008

I bought this tadpole habitat for my son for his 8th birthday. I agree with the other reviews in that the "free tadpole" cost me $7.00. That was misleading because you feel when you purchase it that the tadpole is already paid for in the price of the habitat.
We were lucky in that the tadpole arrived alive and remained alive. We watched it turn from tiny tadpole to the tiniest little frog I have ever seen and this was a fascinating experience. We still have it and we named him Tiny. However, if I had to do it all over again I would not purchase this item because it does leak and it is easy to see how the frog, as small as it is, could get stuck in between the plastic insert and the container and get squashed. The design is terrible and not worth the potential problems you are likely to have with it.
If you do get it, here is a piece of advice. Get a large turkey baster from one of the dollar stores and use that to remove the water and then add new water. This habitat is small and it only takes about 2 minutes to empty it and complete the whole process. While it is still a tadpole, remove only half to three quarters of the water and then refill with clean water. I think the tadpole is too delicate to be removed and placed back in. Once it is a frog, you can empty the whole container with the baster and add all fresh water. This keeps it from leaking and keeps the tadpole / frog safe.

We had problems with this habitat from the moment we started using it. It is flimsy, leaky, and it has a major design flaw--there is a gap between the plastic cover and the fake "terrain" the frog is supposed to crawl on. Initially this was just an inconvenience as the crickets we fed the frog fell in the gap. Then one morning my son was crushed to find his beloved frog, Hot Sauce, had fallen in the gap and was literally smashed flat. If you want to raise a frog, visit a pet or reptile store and buy an actual aquarium or terrarium--don't risk letting your kids make a grim discovery.

My daughter received this for her 9th birthday. She also has the Backyard Safari Bug Habitat as well as the Safari Bug Vacuum. We didn't bother to order the tadpole, since we have a pond close by that we could gather tadpoles and small (1 inch) peeper frogs from if we wanted.
Rather than use this as a "frog" habitat she uses it to house her salamander "Sally Mander", who is 11 cm. long. We fill the water container only 1/2 to 3/4 full, and added a few rocks so "Sally" could hide when needed. Since the salamander is slender, "Sally" can climb between the water container and the interior shell and not get caught or hurt. She even climbs the sides of the tank and takes an occasional swim through the water. We use the Safari Bug Habitat and vacuum to catch and store bugs for "Sally" and my daughter also uses the Bug Habitat to keep her salamander in while she cleans out the water tray from the Safari Frog Habitat. We have had frogs before and have the best luck keeping them in an aquarium designed as a terrarium with live plants.
"Sally" seems quite content and loves being in her Backyard Safari Frog Habitat. I suppose it would work quite well as a home for newts too! As for keeping frogs, it appears from other reviews on this product, its not the best.
It does not work to have frogs in it, they will get stucked..and die... August 21, 2007

Me and my two girls bought this at Target this summer. It is hard plastic around, and a softer plastic where you have the water for the frogs, it is hard to change the water by your self, you have to be two, becouse the plastic where the water is is so soft. when the frogs are a little bit older, and trie to climb on to land, there is a chanse they never make it, becouse there is a gap betweene where the water is and where the dry land is, and if they get between there, they will never come up (they should have made the hole thing in one big piece!), becouse you cant lift the land up, withoute distroy the habita. and the poore little frogs that comes beetween are just lying there dying, and then it starts to smell..., and the kids are upset...
And there is a lot of holes in the bottom, so when my girls are loking at the frogs, and they move the habita a bit, sometimes some water comes out on the table where it stands, so be carefoul you don't distroy youre table, like we did.
I could not recomend you to buy this product, it looks qute, and it is a nice idea, but it is not practicall!!

I heard they should have good habitas, but I did not try it.

My 6 year old twins have wanted this bug/frog habitat since the first day they saw it. We decided it would make a fun and eductional birthday gift and summer project. Having ordered ladybugs and ants by mail before, we decided to go to our "local pet store". The instructions make it sound as if any pet store would have a leopard frog tadpole and this is not the case. Finding one at an exotic pet store,we bought one and have enjoyed it for about 2 weeks. One night, "Polly" jumped out and got stuck between the habitat and the cover. The boys were crushed. In addition to our questioning how a full sized leopard frog would be content living in this habitat, the full extent of what we were getting into was a surprise as well. The frog feeding and life expectancy require more research than indicated. Our habitat also "leaked" if you got water between the insert and base.
