Product Description This award-winning educational product introduces children to the magic of books and reading. LeapPad interactive books and cartridges incorporate activities that develop vocabulary, spelling and phonics awareness. Each book is packed with engaging activities, games, stories and facts that make learning to read a pleasure. Touch the special LeapPad books with the included "magic" pen to: hear words and stories read out loud, learn letter sounds, hear colorful characters come alive and play engaging learning games. The LeapPad learning system comes with a 24-page interactive book. Additional expansion book and cartridge sets sold separately. It requires four AA batteries, which are not included.
Editorial Review This talking book comes with an interactive "magic pen" that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as "Strike one!" for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. --Gail Hudson

Learning November 5, 2008 J. Wolnitzek (Calabash, NC) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Purchase this product and your child can learn to read without Parents. Thats right, give this to your child and then you can no longer be apart of their childhood memories. Buy a book from Amazon and read it to your kids at night, during the day, on your lunch break.....read together. LeapFrog is creating new ways to isolate the child and create a lonely environment with an animated voice. Don't buy this with the notion your child will pronouce their words better, or make reading fun. You make reading fun, the parents. Its just a fancy toy not a tool.
Great for kids September 26, 2007 A. Verchimak (Illinois) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My daughter, now seven, is in an advanced reading class. I think part of that reason is we encourage her to read and a big part of that was her using the leappad.
Great educational toy! My child loves it! August 23, 2007 Risa (NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My child plays with his leap pad everyday and enjoys it. The toy is educational and has a lot of books to choose from to go with the leap pad. Seems durable enough to save for my other child when he gets bigger. I am very happy with this purchase.
Terrific learning toy with enormous value and replayability. June 19, 2007 Eric Endres (Richland, WA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We travel a lot in an RV and these things are great for long hours on the road. My girls absolutely love them and can play through the same books over and over. They're excellent learning tools, too. My 4 year-old knows all about dinosaurs now and can speak a lot of Spanish phrases, which she learned from these books. My 2 year-old is just starting to be able to actually use these as intended as far as following the prompts and answering the questions and playing the games, but she has also enjoyed playing with it for quite a while before now, just to press the buttons with the pen and see what happens and hear the funny sounds.
They have a lot of popular media titles including Dora, Dr. Seuss, Winnie the Pooh, Toy Story, The Wiggles, Spongebob, Spiderman, etc., but some of my girls' favorite books are the original books created directly for the toy, such as the What Will You Be? book which uses a built-in microphone to do a Mad Libs kind of thing. We've all had a lot of laughs with that one.
Batteries last a surprisingly long time in the machine and the books can be bought at a reasonable price if you search around places like Big Lots and eBay and here on Amazon. We have the MyFirst LeapPad, meant for toddlers, and the regular LeapPad, meant for preschoolers and elementary aged kids. Once my 4 year-old got the regular LeapPad, my 2 year-old had to play the "big girl" LeapPad, too, so we got another one for her and those are mostly the ones they play with now, but both of them still enjoy playing with the MyFirst LeapPad sometimes, too.
Fun and Educational February 27, 2007 T. Larscheid (Milwaukee, WI USA) My daughter has been enjoying this leap pad for a month now. Many leaning levels, with well known charaters (Disney, Pixar, etc.) which enhances her fun while learning. So far this appears to be a great educational tool.
