3 out of 5 stars Questions about Brunton Quality Control & Amazon Policies   May 26, 2009

This compass was shipped to me on May 13. When I opened it up to use it, I noticed there was no red circle denoting north. I called Brunton & they told me to ask for a replacement through Amazon. I did so through Amazon's return policy but I got this remark-

"1 of Brunton Eclipse Compass, Condition: new, Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
For safety reasons, items that are classified as hazardous materials or use flammable liquids or gases cannot be returned to Amazon.com. Customers should dispose of hazardous materials according to Local, State and Federal regulations. Customers should contact their local government or local waste company for directions on how to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste."

I recontacted Brunton & they agreed to send me an existing one they had if I sent it back to them; in fact, they were interested in seeing this one. They also said that despite Amazon's warning, that this unit contains no hazardous materials, only plastic & a tiny bit of mineral oil.

Today, I received a used replacement (slightly scratched up but otherwise useable). The Eclipse is easy to use & comes with a neckstrap that doubles as a whistle. Overall, I'm satisfied with the compass but it does bring to question their quality control measures.

I am a longtime Prime member & have found Amazon to be fast & generally a good experience. However, I was unable to find a contact telephone number or even an email links to Amazon customer service. If I was rating Amazon, I'd give them a single star on this purchase, and due to this buying experience, I will reconsider any future Amazon purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Compass   April 22, 2009

Positive: The lanyard includes a safety whistle. Includes a book that shows how to use it as a map protractor too! Very cool.

Negative: The circle in a circle design makes me wonder, "why did they think this was better than a normal compass needle?"

Way cool: On the underside, there is a bevel that allows you to set the map declination so no more adding or subtracting the dec angle!

5 out of 5 stars Great Compass   January 12, 2008

I have purchased two of these compasses. One for me and one for my son. My son competes in orienteering and this is his favorite compass.

I teach orienteering for the Boy Scouts and find this to be a great compass. It settles down to a bearing very fast. The declination adjustment is easy to use and demonstrate. The shape fits my hand. The dial is in one degree increments and has a magnifier built in to make reading easy. The detachable lanyard includes an emergency whistle. There is a magnifier to make map reading easier and several useful scales are on the base.

The blue circle on the base for orienting the compass to north wore off over time so I had to touch it up with a very fine Sharpie.

It is a bit pricey but the quality is very good. Unfortunately it is too expensive as a general Scout compass.
